driven by fear and the quest for vitality.

At 53 years of age I have stepped up my game significantly. I cut out all gluten , I shake twice a day, a cabinet full of supplements that get used most days (unless I am fasting) and so on. I exercise like I am trying to murder myself and have moved from all weight training to a more mobility “slash” functional routine top it off with Yoga on Sundays . I do all these things because I am petrified of growing old.  Why am I so petrified? well, its because I have seen what happens to older folks when the wheels come off and no, I don’t want to go there anytime soon. I was there when the doctor was coaching my dad on what to expect when they did his quadruple bypass (not pretty) and I know with out a doubt that I would rather die that have my sternum sawed open and my chest cavity exposed (until it happens of course) .  Fear is what drives me and I am not ashamed to say it. The vitality part is just a bonus but hey, I look around at my demographic and not many guys out there can look straight down naked and still see their wiener (I’m not sure why this is so important to me, I mean there are mirrors that make this easy)  .

My best friend James is the polar opposite. He believes the advantage to taking his diabetes meds is that it corrects his blood sugar levels enough to allow him to eat more sugar. He cant see his wiener when he looks downward nakedly and he doesn’t seem too panicked about any of it.  I try to preach to him the prevailing guru health think but he just shrugs and says “dude we all get old ..chill”! Chill ? Really..? this cant be the answer .  I mean I saw the movie 300 and all those old Senators still had six packs .

Peace

Crossfit has changed my life at 52

Its Sunday morning and I just took my dogs on a good hike along the bayou and noticed that my ability to run the trails , climb over obstacles and basically move freely throughout the countryside was not impinged by my 52 year old frame. I feel lots of energy and because I do CrossFit my body gets hit with a variety of movements and exercises that help prepare me for eddie.jpgan active lifestyle.

I live in Houston Texas and JJ Watt is somewhat of a living legend around here but there is a phenomena that takes place in the human psyche that too much of a good thing is a bad thing. You cant live in in Houston without a barrage of JJ Watt ads and billboards stacked all around you and you start to forget that he is such a great football player and begin to feel like ok .. enough is enough. I feel the same way about CrossFit , I feel like its over hyped and everyone who does it wants you to know they do it but there is a reason for it. Like JJ , CrossFit is really great.

I know it looks like a mugshot. I don’t selfie well.

CrossFit began as a training ground for the extreme athlete but has evolved into a an every day fitness regimen for all fitness levels and ages.  Most CrossFit gyms have a basics course to train folks on the fundamental movements and proper body mechanics to prevent you from getting injured. I highly recommend you go visit a box near you to talk to one of the coaches about your fitness goals to see if CrossFit is for you . I can tell you that you are not too old or too out of shape to give it a try .

Romans 12:21 states “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good “
When you take on something like CrossFit you are taking on something that tends to correct other things in your life that may have been out of whack like poor eating habits, smoking, drinking etc..

CrossFit will change your life no matter what level of exercise you are used to if you are willing to give it a try.

Thank you,
Andrew
